Originally through school I wasn't going to be a physiotherapist until I suffered an injury whilst playing basketball. I was actually going to be an accountant. Until I had this experience as a client myself I wasn't terribly aware of physiotherapy even though I had been a few times in my life when I was much younger following a few injuries playing sport. This led me to ask the question "Could I be an accountant for the rest of my life?" Ultimately, the answer was no, I enjoyed sport, I enjoyed being active, meeting and talking with people. I didn't see accounting providing this opportunity. Through physiotherapy, I saw myself being able to assist people in living their best lives, I could help them play the sport they love, improve their quality of life, assist them in being able to play in the backyard or park with their kids or grandkids. It allowed me to help others.
So I enrolled at James Cook University, the local university in Townsville and began my degree which finished in late 2015. Following graduating I moved to Brisbane and began working at North Lakes Sports and Spinal and Everton Park Sports and Spinal in 2016. The experience between these two clinics exposed me to a wide range of people ranging from elite athletes such as Olympic, Commonwealth and Paralympic athletes, to athletes that play local sports such as NPL Football, Queensland and Australian representative youth athletes, and through to a wide range of presentations such as
low back pain,
whiplash,
ankle sprains and everything in between. These clinics allowed me to experience working with exercise physiologists, psychologists, personal trainers, strength and conditioning coaches, and podiatrists.
In 2019 I started working at Activate Health and Fitness in Brisbane CBD, a very different experience to the previous clinics I had worked at. This clinic operated as a dual gym and treatment space with access to massage therapists, personal trainers, and a nutritionist.
In 2020 I officially opened PRP Physio. I didn't time it too well by opening in February and then Covid-19 starting just a few months later. It was tough but it worked and allowed me to explore avenues that I believe provide the best experience for clients as well as how to provide the best environment for clients to be successful in rehabilitating from their injuries. I originally worked within an office space at then The Lakes FC, now North Lakes United. Following Covid-19 throughout the year and a few forays into mobile physiotherapy I decided to take the leap full time and became a mobile physiotherapy clinic.
My philosophy for physiotherapy is that clients deserve time. I find too often clinics, regardless of their profession, are simply making appointments shorter and shorter and I find this disappointing, I don't believe it allows practitioners to treat their clients as people. Extended consults allow for more in-depth conversations, more time to answer questions, and more time to deliver individualised and targeted hands on treatment. It is my belief that mobile physiotherapy is superior to most offerings provided by physiotherapy clinics, greater privacy and a better insight into who you are as a client, your life and surroundings, as well as a greater insight and understanding of you as a person.
